Algebra 1AB
Algebra 1AB is designed to extend students’ previous experience with patterns to a more formal understanding of relations, functions, and the symbolic language and structure of algebra.. Students perform symbolic calculations accurately and flexibly move between symbolic, graphical and numerical representations. Students engage in intellectual activities that include analyzing, classifying, planning, and comparing and communicate their processes and results orally and in writing. They use mathematical tools to enhance their content knowledge. Students work in small groups or independently using various techniques to solve problems, perform investigations, and reinforce skills. Assessment is integral to the curriculum and instruction and is both formative and summative. As a result, all students will exhibit high levels of achievement by completion of rigorous mathematics that provide barrier-free access to post-secondary education, advanced technology education, or entry into a technology-rich workplace. Symbolic reasoning and calculations with symbols are central in algebra. Through the study of algebra, a student develops an understanding of the symbolic language of mathematics and the sciences. In addition algebraic skills and concepts are developed and used in a wide variety of problem-solving situations. Successful completion of Algebra 1AB prepares students for Geometry AB and meets UC/CSU admission requirement.
