Memoir
My career at GHS started in 1994. I was part of the first 9th grade class that joined the Bulldog ranks. I remember being directed to the gym where the school staff proceeded to explain how our classes and schedules were going to work. The administration seemed overwhelmed and not prepared for our arrival. Nevertheless, we were now Bulldogs. From then on a whole new world opened up for me. I would wake up at 5am to take public transportation from South Central to East LA to get to school. As I enrolled through open enrollment I needed to take a couple of busses to get to school. My first class, English, was in the bungalows by the baseball fields. I enjoyed starting my mornings listening to the band practice.
I spent a wonderful 4 years at GHS. I Joined the JROTC starting my first year and moved up the ranks to make Company XO with the rank of Cadet CPT. I was the interim Battalion Commander for a few months and had lots of fun with it. I was in charge of a lot of wonderful people and enjoyed teaching as well as learning from others. I had the privilege of joining the JROTC drill team back when we were still using the real weapons and not the fake plastic ones that are being used now. When you made a mistake with those weapons, it truly hurt. I spent most of my years in JROTC going to every competition. I enjoyed San Luis Obispo, Clear Creek, all of the parades we participated in, and All-City Staff Competitions were the best.
I was fortunate enough to have studied under US ARMY Colonel McLeod and Sergeant Major Komrosky. JROTC was the best and I learned a lot of leadership and personal values that I still hold on to.
I left JROTC my senior year to chase my other love, music. I joined the GHS mariachi my senior year and had tons of fun. I loved being able to leave classes in order to perform. We also got to play on the stage at the auditorium several times. I was very saddened to hear the news that it had been burnt to the ground.
I had tons of fun at GHS and met lots of people that I grew to be extremely fond of. The teachers were wonderful and attentive. They really cared about the students. I will never forget my years at GHS. To this day, if I am ever in the area, I will make it a point to drive past the school and take a stroll down memory lane.
As luck may have it, I fell in love with a beautiful girl that attended RHS. I married my wife, a Roughrider, and we are now expecting our first child. I can’t wait for my kid to be old enough to bare the torture of going down memory lane with me.
To the class of ’98, the teachers and staff, “God bless, thanks for the memories and GO BULLDOGS!”
